IN a twisted case of adultery and incest, a grandfather from Taichung was convicted of adultery and fathering his own grandson after an illicit affair with his daughter-in-law, reported Apple Daily Taiwan.
The confusing web of relations started spinning five years ago when rice dealer Lai Yan Xiong, then 60, found a Chinese bride, 23-year-old Chen Mei Hua, for his mentally-disabled son. All was well until three years ago, when his wife Mrs Lai Zeng Yu, now 65, caught Lai and Chen in bed. A furious Mrs Lai sued her husband for adultery, but the case was dropped due to lack of evidence. She then entered a settlement with her husband, who gave her NT$40million ($1.8m) in cash and title deeds, to drop the case. Not long after, Chen gave birth to a son. But Mrs Lai felt that the baby did not look like her son at all, and suspected her husband of fathering the child. She took saliva samples from both her son and the baby and did a DNA test. The test results confirmed that her son did not father the baby. Mrs Lai went to court a second time, but her case was declared void as Mrs Lai had already entered a settlement with her husband earlier. FRESH EVIDENCE Lai then sent Chen and the baby back to China. This move, however, was seen as a sign of guilty conscience by the prosecution. They re-opened the case after receiving new testimony from the younger Lai who claimed that he 'saw Ah Pa (father) and wife sleeping together many times'. A second DNA test proved Lai's paternity of his grandchild. And on Thursday, Lai and Chen were sentenced to three months' jail and fined NT$162,000 each. |
